UIL academic programs are designed to support basic curriculum and allow students to apply what they learn in the classroom.

Students are nominated and then select a contest to enter, spend a couple of months practicing the concepts under the supervision of a coach occasionally before or after school , and then compete at the district-wide contest on. This is a wonderful opportunity for your student to perform academically against other students from other districts. This will allow your student to grow to perform at higher levels in high school. The University Interscholastic League offers the most comprehensive literary and academic competitive program in the nation. It offers more than any other UIL division in terms of activities, with 22 high school and 18 elementary and junior high contests.

More than a half million students participate in UIL academic contests. These activities, which exist to complement the academic curriculum, are designed to motivate students as they acquire higher levels of knowledge, to challenge students to confront issues of importance, and to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of specific skills.

From the beginning, administrators from across Texas have served on UIL committees and helped write and establish rules and administrative guidelines.

By voluntary adoption of rules, school people discipline their own interschool activities. Texas school people believe that there is more equitable competition on a state-wide basis when schools compete with other schools of comparable size.

UIL member schools are divided into six conferences according to enrollment. Other states and many Canadian provinces have similar organizations. It is to the credit of the school people of Texas that theirs is recognized as one of the best. Many states have patterned their leagues after the UIL. Texas has often been called on to help its neighbors with their programs, and UIL employees have been named to national offices and committees in recognition of their expertise.
